As a child, Petula Eng was unaware that she was a student of art. Born in Hong Kong in 1953, the daughter of a famous tailor, she was surrounded by celebrity but only interested in the art form of designing and creating exquisite clothing. The contour of shape, the impact of color and most importantly to Petula, the texture of objects fascinated her beyond her own understanding. The light came on and the truth was clear the moment Petula picked up a paint brush. Eight years ago, the artist opened and walked through a door that would change her life forever. The mystery of her haunting was solved, as a painter she could express her feelings on canvas through color and shape.
With no formal training, a new life within her was born and in her own words, she “never looked at anything the same.” The subtleties of beauty, the textures she so loves now come onto the canvas by her brush in hand. A sensitive student of life, Petula incorporates deep thought and emotion provoking symbolism in the gentlest of subjects. She is attracted to images that fulfill her purpose as a painter and her desire to communicate through her art. The artist lives in Rhinebeck N.Y. with her husband. Her paintings are in private collections in the United States and abroad.
